While New York City portrait photographer Heather Swanson is best known for her pictures of celebrities, musicians, and entertainers, her signature projects are those that showcase the beauty of diverse, strong women as she did in The New American Pin-Up and The Doll Collection. Her natural ability to make her subjects feel empowered, attractive and at ease during shoots makes for both a positive experience and the alluring pictures that are the trademark of the diverse portfolio that comprises Heather’s Photography.
In The New American Pin-Up, Heather reinvented the style of the iconic Vargas Girl by offering up a more modern edge, diversity and sensuality. Her black and white portraits were exhibited at several New York gallery spaces including The Cutting Room, B’lo, Suite, and The Half King. The photographs remain on display at Soho’s trendy Enve Beauty Lounge, where the exhibit was launched. Video footage of the collection and the opening gala were featured on both Oprah’s Oxygen Network and on NBC/Mun2’s The Roof. Currently, Heather is revisiting her love of portraying iconic images of beauty with a twist in The Doll Collection, which will feature ten diverse women all immortalized as living dolls.
As a contract photographer for The Learning Channel’s (TLC) promotional television advertisements, website and print media, Heather has taken pictures of some of the stars of the network’s most popular shows, including Stacy London and Clinton Kelly from What Not to Wear; Kate and Jon Gosselin and their children from Jon and Kate Plus 8; Buddy Valastro of Cake Boss; Richard Davis of Flip this House; Jeff Leatham of Flowers Uncut; Doug Wilson from Trading Spaces; and Miss America 2009. This invaluable experience has made Heather equally proficient at working both individually as well as in cooperation with film crews — in studios and on location.
In addition, Heather has photographed a number of calendars including titles for Barnes & Noble featuring San Francisco and New York City. She has also done several editions featuring ‘New York Biker Babes’ including her newest, All for the Ride. Her original infamous series paying homage to the eponymous Manhattan bar was The Girls of Red Rock West.
Her client list includes authors, celebrities and artists from The Oxygen Network, The Learning Channel (TLC), The History Channel, A& E Entertainment, The Discovery Channel, BBC, SONY, and WNYC Radio. Her ever-growing list of celebrity clientele includes comedian Drew Carey; singer/actress Alanis Morissette; supermodel Petra Nĕmcová; NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg; Irish musician Shane MacGowan; actor Dennis Farina (Law & Order); spokesmodel Karen Duffy; Dutch supermodel Frederique van der Wal; Grammy Award-winning artist Maya Azucena; The American Chopper Boys; and super chef Marcus Samuelsson. Her striking photographs have been featured on the covers and in the books of authors Barry Crimmins and O.Kay Jackson. Recently Heather shot with Project Runway’s Tim Gunn and Jaguar for a promotional piece for the fashion awards.
Heather’s work has been featured in a wide range of publications including New York magazine, Ramp magazine, The London Sunday Times, Irish Connections magazine, BMG Music magazine, 411, Ulster Tatler and TimeOut New York.
